One of the greatest things about golf isn’t the scorecard, it’s the people you meet along the way.
This past weekend I participated in another Veterans Golf Association event. This time it was at Apple Valley Golf Course a part of Rumbling Bald on Lake Lure, North Carolina. While it wasn’t my first VGA event, it was my first opportunity to experience the Rumbling Bald courses, and they certainly lived up to their reputation.
The mountain scenery throughout the course is simply spectacular. Every hole seems to offer another incredible view of the surrounding landscape. It made it easy to appreciate why Apple Valley has become one of western North Carolina’s premier golf destinations. The course itself was in outstanding condition. it was challenging enough to keep you focused while remaining enjoyable for golfers of all skill levels.
As impressive as the course was, it wasn’t the highlight of the day.
After retiring from the United States Air Force following 28 years of service, I have come to appreciate organizations like the Veterans Golf Association even more. Their mission extends far beyond organizing golf tournaments. They create opportunities for veterans to reconnect. It helps build new friendships, remain active, and continue experiencing the camaraderie that so many of us miss after military service.
I had the opportunity to meet and play alongside fellow veterans from different branches, backgrounds, and experiences. Like every VGA event I’ve attended, the conversations were just as meaningful as the golf itself.
Experiences like this also shape how I approach my own business.
Through Targeted Possibilities, I work with charities throughout the Southeast. We help create memorable golf tournaments that raise more money while providing a better experience for players. Participating in events from the player’s perspective continually reminds me that successful tournaments are about much more than fundraising alone.
Players remember the atmosphere.
They remember the conversations.
They remember the unique experiences that make an event different from every other tournament they play each year.
Those memories are what keep golfers coming back and what ultimately help charities build stronger tournaments year after year.
I’d like to thank the Veterans Golf Association for everything they continue to do for our nation’s veterans. Also staff at Apple Valley Golf Course for providing such an outstanding venue. If you ever have the opportunity to play either of the Rumbling Bald courses, I highly recommend making the trip.
Sometimes the best rounds of golf aren’t remembered because of the score.
They’re remembered because of the people you shared them with.
If you’re planning a charity golf tournament and looking for ways to create an experience your players will remember long after the final putt, I’d be happy to share some of the ideas I’ve gathered from years of participating in and supporting golf events across the Southeast.
